In addition to housing an impressive mountain range that functions as a nature reserve full of rivers, caves, canyons, waterfalls, rare plant species and home to many animals, the Chapada Diamantina National Park is the ideal option for people who practice ecotourism and also for those who have never had close contact with nature.

Chapada Diamantina is located in the center of the state of Bahia, 420 km from Salvador. It is a vast area of 38,000 km² on a vast plateau that varies from 400m to 2000m at sea level, larger than many countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium or Israel.

The creation and occupation of the towns and villages of Chapada Diamantina is a direct result of diamond exploration. In the 18th century, gold mining began in the southern part of Chapada, in the Río de Contas region, but it was with the discovery of diamonds in the Serra do Sincorá, in the 19th century, that the formation of future cities began like Mucugê, Andaraí and Lençóis, and became the diamond trading center at the time. The money attracted people from everywhere, adventurers, cruise workers, miners, slave owners, merchants, and many others.

After about twenty-five years, the duration of the gold mining phase, with the decomposition of the diamond and the discovery of diamond deposits in Africa, there was a large abandonment of the region. Those who stayed were adapting to rural work, livestock and agriculture. In less prosperous soil areas such as Lençóis, mining lasted until around 1985, when the activity was finally banned, and the Chapada Diamantina National Park was founded, with the intention of protecting the region and promoting ecological tourism.
